"But we’re both normal people, aren’t we? You think just like everyone that because I come from royalty that I must be treated like that and now like a person. You think I’m just like anyone then?"
"Look, I don’t mean to sound like an asshole, but you’re not exactly ‘normal’. You’re royalty. I’m not saying you don’t deserve to be treated like a person, I’m just saying your life is probably far from normal. To a degree. You’re not exactly like one of the workers here, but you’re kind of like anyone."
"Well you should ask the royal you are serving what it’s like sometime. I’ll even share the last cupcake with you. So… I never got to thank you for helping me,"
"I can’t exactly do that. I’m probably not even supposed to be talking to you right now. I’m a stable boy, not royalty. Uh, thanks…but it’s no big deal. Would have done it for anyone, probably."
"Well just call me Ariane. I hate being called Princess or Princess Ariane sometimes. My parents are actually in Scotland so they’re not gonna walk in. Plus they aren’t like that. You can stay though. I mean if you’re not doing anything,"
"Alright, got’cha. I’ll call you Ariane now, but I’ll have to call you Princess Ariane when I’m working, since my boss would probably have my head if I didn’t. Oh, okay. I don’t really know what royalty are like, but all I’ve seen in movies is that they’re like that. I’m on break, so I guess I’ll stick around. Better than being out in the stables."
"I have a name stable boy. You could learn something by using it, Andrew. Now share it. Chef Rizzoli’s cupcakes are amazing.”
"I know your name, Ariane. We’re just supposed to call you ‘Princess’ or ‘Princess Ariane”. So, that’s what I do. Fine, but I should probablky go, before your parents walk in and see you talking to a ‘commoner’.
"Are you eating the last of the red velvet cupcakes the head chef made?"
"Yes, I am. The head chef made these for the workers, and I’m eating the rest before my co-workers can get to them. I’m sure the head chef will make more for you. Anything for the Princess, really.”
"Yes you boy," Ariane’s father said to the boy known as Andrew Walsh. "Well thank you Andrew Walsh. My daughter is precious to me since she’s my only daughter," Ariane couldn’t help but roll her eyes at her father a bit. ‘I’m fine. Don’t mind me. I’m just gonna go clean my own scraped arm," Ariane said. "Andrew, go help my daughter clean her wounds. I’ll make sure the other stable workers will calm Duke down," Ariane just sighed and let this Andrew guy take care of her. "I had Duke perfectly under control," She said to Andrew as she stomped towards the wash station in the stable.
Andrew still could not believe the king was thanking him. He had never interacted with him face to face before, and now he was addressing him directly. His friends would never let him live this down. “Uh, it’s no problem, s-sir. I just wanted to make sure no one got hurt.” He stood awkwardly, not sure what to do. As soon as he heard the king tell him to help his daughter, he nodded and jogged behind her. The princess did not seem happy, but he didn’t really care, since the king directly told him to help her. “I think you and I have different definitions of ‘under control’, miss,” he said, grabbing a towel. In the back of his mind, he knew he shouldn’t be sassing the princess a little bit, but he couldn’t help it. “Just let me clean this up and you’ll be on your merry way.”
Ariane saw the boy come into the horse’s pen quickly, trying to get Duke to calm down. as he grabbed his reigns. When he turned around, she stared at him awe as she heard him rambling. Before she could reply, he was being pushed out the way and guards were coming to get her up. “I’m fine. I’m fine,” She said, brushing her pants off with her scraped hands. She hissed in pain and realized her jacket had ripped and her elbow was bleeding. “You,” She heard her father say to the boy holding her horse. “What is your name sir?” He asked. “You practically saved my daughter from being trampled on,” Ariae scoffed. “I wasn’t going to be trampled father. He hardly did anything,” She protested with crossed arms.
Andrew held onto the horse’s reigns to make sure he wouldn’t stomp again. Luckily, the horse didn’t seem too riled up, but you could never tell with these animals. He let the other boy hold the horse when he noticed the king call out for him. He had never met the man face to face, but he was afraid of making a complete fool out of himself. “M-me?” he said, looking around. He was specifically talking to him, no one else. “Uh, I-I’m Andrew Walsh, your majesty. I’m a stable boy here,” he said as he nodded. He could hear Ariane’s remark in the background, but he decided not to be snappy. Besides, he didn’t want to get on the king’s bad side. “Well, um…he was stomping quite a lot. You never know with these animals, really.”
Ariane made sure to slip the treats she knew Duke, her horse, loved into her blazer pocket as she waited for her parents to finish with their meeting. Her mother and father wanted to spend some time with her before they left for their trip to do some work for the peace corp in Africa. But she was pretty sure this meeting was about the many suitors Ariane had been rumored to be dating. It was no surprise that her parents would want to discuss her relationship with her, wanting the Princess of England to maintain a good girl image in the public. Soon, her mother and father had entered the room because all of the staff in the kitchen acknowledged their presence with bows of their heads. “Aria, come now” Her mother said as she walked arm in arm with her father. She followed them out to the stables and saw the staff waiting there. She gave a small smile, nodding her head in acknowledgement of them when she passed them. She stopped where Duke was and she went over to him, passing the blonde man in front of his gate with a small smile. She opened it and began to notice how uneasy Duke was. “Easy boy,” She said trying to pet him but he began to stomp his feet, scaring her and causing Ariane to fall below him.
Andrew kicked the dirt in front of him as he waited. The family wouldn’t be too long now, but he just wanted to get back to work. He had always felt that the greetings were awkward and too old-timey for him, but he had to do them. Eventually, he heard the doors open, where he saw the guards and the royal family follow. He had to admit, they were all good looking people, especially the daughter. Andrew knew virtually nothing about the family, except the fact that she was next in line for the throne. He tried not to look up too much about the family. in fear of finding out that they were actually horrible people. He smiled and bowed as the family walked by. Suddenly, he heard a horse whinny, and what sounded like someone falling. He spun around where he saw the princess on the ground, and he and a few other stable boys rushed to the horse. “Whoa, Duke, easy boy,” he said, grabbing onto the horse’s reigns to calm him down. He held on tight, and managed to look back in her direction. “Uh, miss — Princess Ariane — are you—” he managed to get out before he was pushed out of the way by the guard.s Frowning, he held onto the reigns and waited to see if she was okay.
Andrew appreciated his job, he really did. He was able to work in a foreign country and work almost directly under royalty, which isn’t something everyone could say. What he didn’t appreciate was the fact he was job was pretty much cleaning horse shit. He worked in the stables, and all day he either cleaned the stables, cleaned the horses, or fed them. It wasn’t the most glamorous job, but as a broke college drop-out who moved to a foreign country on a whim, it was better than being jobless. He wiped his brow, mucking one of the last stalls. It was a hot day, and although the royal family was kind enough to provide their employees with plenty of water, he couldn’t deny that it was almost like torture. He sighed and was about to walk out when one of the other stable boys walked in, looking just as sweaty and disgusting as he did. “Andrew!’, the other man exclaimed, ‘the King, Queen and Princess are coming out today. I just heard they’re gonna be here in about ten minutes, and boss wants everyone to look their best. Get a towel and clean up a little, will you?” he said before turning off. Andrew rolled his eyes and grabbed a clean towel before jogging out front. He hadn’t met any of the royalty yet, but he had been trained on how to act when they came around. “I mean, I’ve still got some shit on me, but I think I look decent,” he said to everyone else lined up. They chuckled a little, but stopped when their boss came around. He sighed and got into his place in line, waiting for the royalty to come out and greet them.
